Text

‘Open, close, grab, move, tie’ are the actions that title the new exhibition of Albert Riera Galceran. The artist presents a series of works made during the last year, building the stage for these actions that are deeply integrated into our daily lives. The exhibition presents a specific way of conceiving space, understanding the arrangement of each work as an essential part of a scenography: the place that the artist would like to inhabit. The works are integrated with the architecture of the space, following an aesthetic discourse and seeking new interpretations. With reminiscences of art trouvé and the influence of post-minimal art, Albert Riera Galceran incorporates the manual into the mechanical, allowing error and imprecision to be relevant for the process of making. He playfully seeks aesthetic associations through the modification of material, form and function, obtaining new variables from what is already mimetic and known to us. As a result, the pieces produce perceptual synesthesia, between our preconceived ideas in regards to the objects presented and their modified appearance. His interest relies on questioning the limit that distinguishes one element from another when juxtaposed. Can the chair be presented as a column? What differentiates the support from the frame? Can an architectural element be used as a canvas? What is the borderline that differentiates two concepts? Through the arrangement in the space, all ready-made objects are perceived as works, and works as new objects. The space Riera Galceran presents, becomes recreational, and one rediscovers, as a child, the peculiarities of each material for the first time. As a result, the exhibition is an invitation to explore and inhabit the space of the gallery, taking the objects and actions that have been naturalized, which, however, can be constantly reinterpreted out of their original context. Albert Riera Galceran born in 1995, lives and works in Hospitalet del Llobregat, Spain. He completed his university studies at Central Saint Martins, graduating in June 2018. Solo exhibitions include Existencia Doméstica, Galería Nueva, Madrid, 2020; Interplay, New York, 2019; SOL, Barcelona, 2018; Nudes, Palau de Casavells, Miquel Alzueta Gallery, 2017; Lust, Gallery 46, London, 2017. As well as has been included in group exhibitions internationally such as: Casabanchel x Casa Antillón, Madrid, 2019; What's the building in there, Claptrap Gallery, Antwerp; The Politics of Pink, The Dot Project, London, 2018.
